Fox O'Clock

Wes Anderson's amazing new film Fantastic Mr Fox is on the horizon and I'm super excited after watching the trailer here.

It looks epic and as always with Wes Anderson's films the art direction and attention to detail looks stunning. He does like his varying shades of yellow doesn't he? Also, I'm sure I've seen Wes Anderson himself wearing a suit exactly the same as Mr Fox...tweed and such. Brilliant.

I wonder what Mr Dahl would think of it...I'm sure he'd be well happy.

Another animated film out soon is the new Pixar movie Up.

I saw it when I was in California a few months back and it's rather special, mainly thanks to it being one of the first new 3D flicks. As you'd expect from a Pixar film, the quality of animation is brilliant, but it's the 3D-ness that will blow your mind. Worth going to see it for the experience alone.

The storyline - well, that's where it lacks a bit...the premise is simple, but it soon spirals into a contrived and random tale, a bit of a poor man's Howl's Moving Castle if you ask me. But it is definitely worth a watch, even just for the excellent short film that precedes the main feature. Out in October over here I think.

Chinchilla Thriller

Looking directors at the moment, and I'm loving this spot to advertise Las Vegas (!) It goes off on such a randomly brilliantly tangent, and you know they had an awesome time on set!

It's shot by Roderick Fenske at Hungry Man.

Sadly this time it's not quite what I'm looking for. Another time Roderick, another time...

Lonely Lodger

I'm on my own for 2 weeks at the moment.

Mr D has left me to fend for myself.

God help us all.

Desktop Sexiness

So, I'm back from my holiday in baking hot Majorca. Back to work, and back to exciting computer desktops. Like this one.

PS. Don't you dare look in my folders or tell anyone about utorrent...
I don't use it, honest.

Projection Power

This is mind-blowing. A stunning facade projection project by Urbanscreen that transforms a two-dimensional surface into a multi-dimensional space by adding depth, time and sound.

The likes of this, combined with the ever-evolving Augmented Reality technology, means we're in for a pretty exciting future media-wise.

Copycunts

Well, this is going to ruffle a few feathers that's for sure. One of my mates just sent me the link to this blog: Copycunts.

Now I have no idea who writes this blog, and to be honest it is perhaps a little harsh, but the subject of plagiarism is always one that really gets the old juices flowing. It's a sad yet true fact that whenever I see a great ad out there nowadays, the first thing I think is 'where did they nick that from?'

Of course, direct obvious thievery is most definitely to be scorned upon. But in actual fact it isn't as simple as that. The big problem is that agencies support and indeed culture such behaviour. It's not always purely down to the creative team. Hear me out.

It has become extremely difficult to sell in an original idea. Everything has to be like something else in order for agency people to 1) understand it 2) feel confident enough to sell it. If there are two ideas up against each other, the one with visual references will 99% of the time be the route that gets made.

So, after learning that this is sadly how things work in most agencies, teams are pretty much forced to succumb to this endless 'referencing' (let's just call it that for now).

I must admit that it took me completely by surprise, naive as I was. Having done courses like the student D&AD and Creative Circle prior to getting hired - where teams are forced to sit in a room with just a layout pad, marker pen and their bare wit - I was used to 'best idea wins.' Best original idea. It's a sign of the times, but put most teams in a room with so few materials now and they wouldn't know what to do with themselves (myself included perhaps). What the hell do you do with Google, YouTube etc?

The amount of times I've seen teams presenting an idea with a 'reference' saying 'and we found this, which fits the idea perfectly!' No, you found that first then crowbarred your idea into the reference. But Creative Directors don't say anything because they can see a superficially good ad and awards, suits just wanna sell, clients lap it up because it's familiar, same with research groups. Going with an original idea means taking a risk. And who can afford to take risks in this climate?

So what happens? The cycle continues. After all, it's easier and your Creative Director is happy. Plus, the work you're getting out is great. Of course it is, because it's already been tried and tested before.

It's usually easy to spot an ad that's been nicked, even if you initially don't recognize the original source, because the actual idea is wafer thin. It's usually an awesome execution with a line/idea that's short and pithy.

So the moral of all this? Get back to basics. Write a fucking good idea. It takes longer but it's more satisfying and your conscious will be clear. Tell me something true about the product in an imaginative, interesting way I've never previously thought about. Once you've got an awesome strategy, then you can find a reference.

Of course, some people couldn't give a fuck. They'll keep on 'referencing'. Because it's easy. And hey, us creatives need to be down with 'popular culture'. And at the end of the day, being an advertising creative isn't just about having good ideas, it's about being canny, political and knowing how to play the sodding game.

Pushing Stuff Through the Sand

Some photos from the McD 'Blooming Beach' shoot. One of those ideas that is simple when written on a script, but is a whole different ball game in reality. Fun though.

Ice Cube - Pimpin' da Nikes

This probably isn't the best ad in the world, but it features that classic 90s Ice Cube track 'Today was a good day'...and skateboarding. Both of which I quite like. So there you go.

The skater's name is P-Rod, although I think he looks like the cheesy actor who plays Vince in Entourage. P-Rod gets his skateboard run over by Ice Cube!!! Ha Ha Ha!!! Silly P-Rod.

Short films

I've got a few short films in the pipeline, hopefully they'll be ready in the next month or so.

In the meantime, one I did a year ago has just got over 100,000 hits on YouTube, which is kinda cool...even if all the viewers are weird American manicurists saying 'ewwwwwww!!!'

Watch the Nail Project again here if you can bear it.

Cheese Zone Extravaganza

I wish I could say this was mine too, but sadly it's not. This appears to be one advert.

My favourite bit is when the fridge door opens and there's two of the 'chaps' clinging onto to each other inside...for no apparent reason. Sexy.

'Blooming Beach'

Here's a new ad we've just finished for the McDonald's Summer Menu.

Directed by Jeff Thomas at Sonny London.

(Sorry I couldn't be bothered to chop off the MPC countdowny bit at the beginning).

Food Surprises Vol.1

I ate a Kit Kat the other day and was lucky enough to find one of the fingers made purely of chocolate. Don't you just love that? It made me think of other unexpected food surprises...

When I was a kid, free toys in cereal boxes were just about the coolest things ever. One morning I opened a box of Corn Flakes, where inside was supposed to be an exciting figure from the movie Willow...that film with dwarves and shit running round a forest. Imagine my complete surprise when inside the box was not one exciting Willow figure but eighteen! Half the box was full of them. What a morning that was.

On the other hand, a crap food surprise is when you eat a Feast ice cream, and really look forward to the big solid chocolate bit in the middle...bit then finding out you've been dealt a duff one, so the chocolate in the middle's all tiny and decrepid. Rubbish that.

0.02mm

This is a lovely advert. Such a strong execution of a great thought.

See how the idea rolled out as an interactive campaign, culminating in the film above here.

Baby Wombats. They are da bomb!

Panteater

This is a great new campaign for the ethical underpants company Pants to Poverty. It was all written and created by my good friends Ollie & Christen, entitled 'Panteater', a real labour of love!

Alongside the main film, there's all sorts of supporting media and websites. I'll stick a few up as it all unravels.

Skittles 'Hourglass'

Here we go again, a new Skittles ad. The difficult part of any successful campaign is to keep the new executions feeling as fresh and brilliant as the first. This, in my opinion, does that.

Smoke. It's fine.

And here's my rationale:

They say when you smoke a cigarette it takes 5 minutes off your life, but if you smoke a cigarette you get a 5 minute fag break...so actually it all evens itself out.

So the morale of this story: it's alright to smoke.

Love is my message

Jacko was better known for his Pepsi ads, but this is a beauty for Suzuki! What a guy. RIP.

Sign Michael Owen. He's Cool!

It's a right old mixed bag this blog. I also like football, and one player my club, Aston Villa, has been linked with this summer is sick-note special Michael Owen. This brochure has been sent around to tout Owen to prospective new employees. Beautifully designed isn't it?!

I feel a bit sorry for him as he's obviously being badly represented - this has turned him into a bit of a laughing stock. I love the 'Brand Values' that have been boiled down into brilliant key words! 'Charismatic!' Poor old Michael has about as much charisma as wet sock. 'Young'! Not really is he at 29. 'Cool'!!! This is the best one, the poor bloke must be cringing so badly.

I'd still take him at Villa though, on a pay-per-game basis. Him and Carew could cause a few problems up front.

An advert that I've seen

Now I know just how difficult to get a decent ad out is...believe me, I know. If your spot is anywhere near decent after 3 internal hoops (average), the opinions of junior, medium and top clients, not to mention the dreaded research, then you should give yourself a big pat on the back.

I'm not really in that much of a position to be able to pass too much judgement on the work of others yet, mainly because I don't really think I've done anything of such note to warrant it...yet...but I've seen the new Foster's beer commercials on TV a few times now, and they've really got me thinking.

You see, to me it's a case of all the right ingredients being there, but the stars not quite aligning...for some unknown reason. Let's look at the statistics:

- Good client that has a history of buying decent work - Yes.

- Good agency writing the work - Yes.

- Good idea to hang your hat on and write to - I'd say so, Yes.

- A-list director agrees to shoot it - Yes. Most definitely yes.

So what happened here? Is it the scripts? Did the client muddy the waters? I'm a bit confused. The bit that really confuses me is that Frederick Bond's films are normally so simple in their construct - the Carling ads, Brylcreem etc. But this script, in my eyes, possibly over-complicates the idea...which is quite a simple one.

But then Frederick could've sort that out couldn't he? Hmmm, what do I know...

They Stick

Random park ranger, animals, animals licking kids in a slightly disturbing, awkward way...what's not to like here? Stick it in there.

There really is no need for this kind of image now is there?

Marriage: Box Ticked, Move On.

So I got married. And had a lovely honeymoon, where I saw some cool stuff like this...

and this...

But that's as much as i'm willing to share.

Now, how do I do adverts again?

Musical Road

Just the way I like 'em this...bizarre and brilliant with a hint of wtf.

How they managed to pull this off I'll never know. Great bit of thinking that has actually been made and seems to work! (if you listen very carefully and haven't got screaming kids in the back).

Only in Japan...

It's the end of the world!

Sitting in my flat, having a cup of tea when this pesky bird started squawking madly at me. Yes, it's a bright green parakeet...in London. What witchcraft is upon us?!

First the apolyptic stream of helicopters and now tropical birds. Strange things are afoot, and to quote Withnail, perhaps we are indeed entering into the arena of unwell. Fun though. Perhaps I'll jack in adverts and start papping properly, with a unique hook...only airbourne subject matters.

Helicopterama

I was in a meeting the other day, then suddenly looked out the window and saw loads of army (I think) helicopters in the sky. A whole line of them, like something out of Platoon. Freaked me out a bit as the first thing you think of is 'shit, we're under attack.'

I took some photos

I treated myself to a new digital SLR camera last week. Haven't got a clue how to use it, so last night I took an impromptu wander around West London and took a few shots.

It's really weird wandering around with an important looking camera as everyone is suddenly very suspicious of you - are you a paedo, a detective or even worse, a journo?

Anyway, I found a lovely black swan who posed for me no questions asked, so that was cool.

A new Mother-load

Mother have just launched 2 new spots, one for Oasis and one for Coke. Check 'em out:

This the is Oasis one, Rubberduckzilla...

And this is their new Coke spot, Yeah Yeah Yeah La La La, shot by Dougal Wilson.

I'm sure these spots will open up the usual 'wack attack randomness for the sake of it' or 'creative brilliance' debate about Mother's work. I personally think they're both great, leaning more towards Rubberduckzilla...but which ever camp you're in, one thing you can't accuse Mother of is executing first thoughts.

Frootful

An old Cornish friend of mine, Nick Radford, is a fantastic illustrator, photographer, surfer and all-round lovely bloke. He works under the name of 'Frootful'.

Even more annoyingly, he's managed to carve out a reputable career 'up-country' from the depths of Cornwall. That's the dream and he's living it. Good on him though. Check out Nick's work for Cadbury, The Guardian, Howies and more at his website.
